MOTE : notice the small

The universe and all of our encounters in this life are a swirling mass of both macroscopic and microscopic particles, coincidences, and random chance all combining to bring you to this exact moment in time...standing here at a gallery. We are all a part of this temporary compilation and all of it is breathtakingly beautiful, if we take the time to notice. It is my hope that MOTE invites viewers to contemplate their place within the grand tapestry of existence. The individual paintings for MOTE are suggestions...much like ink blots. All are interpretations of seed pods, specimens, lichens, microbes, aeroplankton, birth, death, invasion, the universe, division, expansion, contraction, cells, creatures, anthropology, and even gallstones.

MOTE was created from experiences during two art residencies in 2022/23—one focused on nature with 20 New Brunswick makers in Fundy Park that culminated in a group exhibition entitled Beneath the Surface. The other residency was spent solo in an urban environment at Takt, a work/live studio in Berlin from November to January 2023/24. Much time was spent visiting medical, zoology and art museums in Berlin, Scotland, Amsterdam and Denmark ,taking in some amazing collections and viewing objects through telescopes and microscopes. An immersion and exploration of perspective, scale, and the interconnectedness of macro and microcosms while drawing inspiration from both the natural world and human-made environments.
